In the mid 1960's several small snowmobile clubs began in Forest County. It was only natural that these clubs established trails for their members. Although, the trails were not long nor met any of the requirements of today's trails, they were still trails and rideable.
It was evident by 1973 that with the increase in the popularity of recreational snowmobiling that the clubs would need to groom the trails to keep them in rideable condition. It was also evident to each of these small clubs that they did not have the financial resources to purchase equipment and maintain the individual trails. The clubs tried drags pulled behind snowmobiles, however they soon learned that this was a lesson in futility.
In January of 1974 the Logrollers, Carter Brush Monkeys, Hilltoppers, Sugarbush Snow-Mo-Wheelers and Freedom Winter Weasels met and agreed to form and fund a grooming organization to take care of the approximately 100 miles of club trails. This meeting resulted in the birth of the Lumberjack Memorial Trails, Inc.
The LMTrails has been in existence since 1975. The five small clubs turned all equipment over to the LMTrails and the system financing and operation is under the direction of the Board of Directors. We are very proud of the 100 plus mile LMTrails system. It is our belief that this system offers the recreational snowmobiler one of the safest, best signed and groomed trails in Wisconsin.
Since the purchase of the original equipment the LMTrails has purchased other larger pieces of replacement equipment as trail usage increased. Today the LMTrails operates two Ultimate power units which are capable of pulling a 12' wide bi-fold drag. This equipment is used seven days a week in the snowmobile season. The total grooming hours in a normal winter season exceed 1000 hours.
